Sexual Health FAQs

I had unprotected sex on Thursday night - can I get the morning after pill at YES? And if not where can I go for emergency contraception?
Unfortunately, the morning after pill is not available at YES. Be sure to get yourself to one of the clinics listed below or to a chemist or doctor within 72 hours, preferably sooner. If you go to a chemist, they will give you a couple of tablets to take away and take at set times. The morning after pill is available free on prescription from a doctor at any age, free from selected chemists (the pharmacist needs to have had additional training) if you're under 18 (including under 16's). If you're over 18, there is a charge of about £26 if you don't have a doctor's prescription. If you can get to the GUM clinic at Wycombe hospital they will also be able to run tests for you for Sexually Transmitted Infections which would be a good idea. See times below.

My period's five days late... how long before I can take a pregnancy test?
Test results won't show up until two weeks after the date of having unprotected sex. So try to go along as soon as possible after this date for a test at either a Family Planning Clinic or GUM clinic at Wycombe Hospital (times below) or by calling into YES during opening hours (11 - 5pm weekdays and Saturdays 12 - 3pm)

Can you get pregnant your first time having sex?
Yes, - which is why it's so vital to practice safe sex every time. And you can pick up Sexually Transmitted Infections on your first time…so wearing a condom protects you from both.

Where can I get hold of the pill and can I have it without parental consent?
Yes you can get the pill without parental consent/involvement. Try your GP or if you'd prefer confidentiality you can go to the Family Planning Clinic at Wycombe Hospital...see below.

How can you make a boy uses a condom?
You have to resolve to be firm before any sexual experience and stick to your resolve. It is vital for your safety that you are protected both from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and any boy who really cares about you should have your well-being at heart. Anyone who doesn't agree probably isn't to be trusted anyway.

My boyfriend is pressing me for full sex but I think I'm too young. What's the best way to make him respect my wishes?
Talk to him. It's up to you to decide what you want and when. You're the only one who knows your body and knows what you feel ready for. Just like above, anyone who pressures you to do something you don't feel ready for, probably doesn't really have your welfare at heart and may not be entirely trustworthy. If he really cares for you he should want what you want and be prepared to wait until you're ready. And bear in mind that if you are under 13 having sex is illegal and your boyfriend could be prosecuted for rape even if you give your consent.

I think I'm pregnant, can I get an abortion on the nhs without my parents knowing?
Yes you can, although it may not be the ideal scenario. It can be really helpful to have the support of your family whilst going through a procedure such as this. But if you're really frightened of their reaction, then you can go it alone. Go first of all to the Family Planning Clinic at Wycombe Hospital and they'll advise you on all of this.

Can you get pregnant from sperm on a boy's fingers?
It is possible to get pregnant in this way but it is unlikely. So unless you have good reason to worry about being pregnant - say from other signs such as a late period - you probably don't need to worry about it.

I think I may have a vaginal infection of some sort - it can be itchy and sometimes there's a discharge. Do you think it's thrush?
Get yourself checked out. It may be nothing; it may be serious. The walk-in checkout clinic at Wycombe Hospital is open for under 17's without an appointment on Tuesdays. See below.

I hear you give out free condoms. How many can I get at one time?
If you call into YES during weekday opening hours you can ask to see a volunteer in private and then ask for some condoms. You'll probably be able to have about 6 at a time, and you can always return for more later.

Can you get STD's from oral sex?
There is a very small risk of contacting sexually transmitted infections through oral sex, so it's recommended that you always use a condom even when not having full sex.

What is the average size of a boy's penis?
There is no average or standard size for a boy's penis. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and the key thing to remember is that the size when flaccid (in other words not erect) is irrelevant to the size when erect. Size is also irrelevant to a boy's ability to satisfy his partner. So remember that most young men worry about the size of their penis...usually with no good reason.
